Massive amounts of time and effort are spent in modern societies on trying to control people's perceptions, values and behaviour. This development can be traced back directly to tactics developed by the advertising industry and in totalitarian Communist regimes. The hypernormalisation of junk values, thought policing, punishing those encouraging or engaging in free thought / speech, making certain words / concepts punishable by incarceration are all standard practice under totalitarian regimes.

In his most famous novel Brave New World (1932) and his final novel Island (1962), he presented his vision of dystopia and utopia, respectively.  George Orwell, was an English novelist, essayist, journalist and critic. His work is characterised by lucid prose, biting social criticism, opposition to totalitarianism and mass surveillance. As a writer, Orwell produced literary criticism and poetry, fiction and polemical journalism; and is best known for the allegorical novella Animal Farm (1945) and the dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949). Century of the Self (Part 1): Happiness Machines.  The first episode of a classic documentary series that expores how psychology is used by the elite to control the masses. Episode 1 explores the story of the relationship between Sigmund Freud and his American  nephew, Edward Bernays. Bernays invented the public relations profession  in the 1920s and was the first person to take Freud's ideas to  manipulate the masses. He showed American corporations how they could  make people want things they didn't need by systematically linking  mass-produced goods to their unconscious desires.
